Tempranillo means “little early one”, a name given to it by Spanish growers who observed its habit of ripening early. It grows extremely well in topographically diverse regions with high diurnal temperature variation (ie cool nights, warm days) so the King valley climate is perfect. It has a wide range of aromas ranging from strawberries, plums, blackcurrants and cherries, to prunes, chocolate, leather and dried herbs and tobacco.
We like to think that we have done all the hard work before the winemaking process begins, relying on the quality, and character, of the fruit to determine each winemaking stage. Simply put, we allow a moderately cool ferment in small open vats and hand plunge each day. When the desired level of tannin and flavour extraction is achieved, the ferment is pressed and allowed to mature for 9 months before bottling. We choose to bottle this wine relatively young, therefore preserving the lifted aromatic quality.
Ethereal aromatics of mixed summer berries complemented by underlying savoury tones of dried herbs, tobacco leaf and forest floor. Soft berry fruits are weaved into a savoury and earthy palate. A moreish wine with elegance, depth and persistence.
